Some of the city’s most popular murals include South Congress’ I Love You So Much wall + the Austin postcard on South First Street, but there are plenty of other less-photographed murals you can find around town that are just as meaningful.

Here are some unique unsung murals in Austin + the stories behind them.

Before I Die…, 206 E. Elizabeth St.

Created by New Orleans-based artist Candy Chang, this chalkboard mural made for dreamers is an interactive piece of art. Pick up a piece of sidewalk chalk to share your hopes, dreams, and the things that matter to you most.

Butterfly Effect, 1111 E. 6th St.

Artist + philanthropist Tasha Wahl created the Butterfly Effect, an interactive philanthropic movement that has a message echoing Gandhi’s belief that we must each be the change we want to see in the world. Take a photo next to the installation and post it on social media using #ButterflyEffect.

Writing on the Walls Project, 111 E. Cesar Chavez St.

Painted on the west side of the LINE Austin hotel stands an unnamed 12-story mural, the largest in Austin. Painted by urban artists Sandra Chevrier + Shepard Fairey, this gigantic piece honors the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

Tau Ceti, 201 E. 2nd St.

Gleaming at 10 stories + 103 ft tall, Tau Ceti is a remarkably painted gradient color spectrum by artist Josef Kristofoletti. Located downtown, the mural embodies unity and diversity, much like the people who make up Austin. Visit the piece to see the jaw-dropping spectrum of hues for yourself.

These are just a few worthwhile murals Austin has to offer. Did you know you can see them on a map here? After you visit these spots, make sure to keep exploring the city to find other public art pieces + share your favorites with us by tagging #ATXtoday.
