A brief history of Austin celebrity Super Bowl commercial appearances

As you watch Super Bowl LIX, keep watch for a few familiar, local faces that will make a cameo during the commercials.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off in Super Bowl LIX this weekend, and though we won’t see any Texas teams in the game, there will be plenty of Austin representation in the commercials.

Austinite and jack-of-all-trades Matthew McConaughey will be front and center in Uber Eats commercials. If you watched the NFL playoffs, you may have already seen him playing famous former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka or explaining game food conspiracy theories.

Not only that, but Glen Powell will rock a long, blond wig for Ram Trucks during this year’s ad breaks.

Suffice to say, keep your eyes peeled for some of Austin’s most famous residents on your TV screens this weekend. While we have you, let’s take a peek at some other Austin icons’ Super Bowl commercial appearances.

Gary Clark Jr. in “Rock Star” for Workday | 2023

A local rock star himself, Gary Clark Jr. shared the small screen with musicians Ozzy Osbourne, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, and Paul Stanley.

Jonathan Van Ness in “Why Not an EV?” for GM | 2023

The “Queer Eye” hair stylist (and A-list Austinite) can be seen consoling a bride left at the altar as they drive away — with Will Ferrell and Antoni Porowski — in the back of an EV.

Willie Nelson in “Legalize” for Sketchers | 2022

The outlaw country cowboy and “comfort expert” himself appeared on screens to advertise for Sketchers in 2022, making a cheeky joke that the shoes feel so good, they must be illegal. An alternate version of the ad had actors singing Nelson’s hit “On The Road Again” while donning their sneakers.

McConaughey in “New Frontier” for Salesforce | 2022

McConaughey delivers a monologue about focusing on the earth, people, and communities around us in an “Around the World in 80 Days"-themed ad.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler + Robert Iler in “New Generation” for Chevrolet | 2022

The TV siblings — who now call Austin home — starred in this EV-forward ad paying homage to “The Sopranos” famous theme song.

McConaughey in “Flat Matthew” for Doritos | 2021

McConaughey becomes his own version of “Flat Stanley,” which is equal parts charming and unsettling, in this series of ads for Doritos 3D.

Jonathan Van Ness in “Pop-Tarts Fixed the Pretzel” | 2020

JVN looked as glam as ever while advertising Pop Tarts Pretzels in a nostalgic format, complete with fan-flowing hair and a wink to seal the deal.

Baker Mayfield in “NFL 100: It’s On” | 2019

The former Longhorn isn’t the only pro-baller featured — Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Rob Gronkowski, and Dick Butkus can all be seen cringing at off-screen tackles in this ad.
