Our love list: ATXtoday editor’s top picks for February

Fill your February with festivities using our recommendations for drinks, eats, and activities.

A frozen pink cocktail, a classic espresso martini, and a cold brew coffee with foam sit on a wooden table.

We recommend ordering the frosé, espresso martini, and Caramelccino at Freddo ATX.

City Editor Morgan here. At ATXtoday, the whole city of Austin is my office — and my playground. City Editor Figi and I are always on the hunt for the best eats + activities the Capital City has to offer, all so we can bring you top-notch recommendations.

Here are a few of my favorite things we’ve tried over the past month and our top picks for things to do in February.

See “Les Misérables” at Bass Concert Hall

A play bill for "Les Misérables" being held up from a seat in Bass Concert Hall. In front of the playbill, a yellow ticket to the show is being held as well.

“I Dreamed A Dream” that I would see this musical one day, and it came true.

After attending the opening night of this award-winning musical, I’ll be singing “One Day More” until further notice. Grab tickets to see the show through Sunday, Feb. 9, and get excited to see Lindsay Heather Pearce (a former Elphaba from “Wicked” and “Glee” cast member) as Fantine. Psst — “Hamilton” and “Moulin Rouge” are also coming to Bass Concert Hall soon.

Eat brunch at Teddy’s Restaurant and Bar

Thank you, Teddy’s, for my newfound love of huckleberries. The state fruit of Idaho and Montana is the star of the show on the newly launched brunch menu of this southwestern bistro, but don’t skip the Cowboy Carajillo frozen cocktail that arrives in an adorable glass boot.

Try to-go omakase from Tancho Sushi

A box full of sashimi, nigiri, and a sushi roll from Tancho Sushi on a white counter. Chopsticks sit in front of the to-go omakase box.

With instructions and a pairing guide, the only difficult part of this omakase is picking a favorite bite.

We loved our dinner at Tancho Sushi, but eating its box of to-go omakase for lunch was an equally thrilling experience for our taste buds. Plus, it comes with tips + tricks for how to enjoy the meal and a guide for pairing each bite with the sauce that compliments it best. Pro tip: this would make for a perfect at-home date night for Valentine’s Day.

Make homemade pasta with CocuSocial

Just call us Chef Morgan and Chef Figi from now on. We took a handmade pasta class at Fareground and are still daydreaming about the finished product. Book a CocuSocial class to learn something new this month and impress your dinner guests for years to come.

Work up a sweat at Activate Games

A display of instructions for a game room at Activate Games. On a small screen, instructions are shown for how to play "Bullet Train." The screen is surrounded by colorful lights.

Tutorials teach you how to play each game at Activate.

Activate Games is a new addition to The Domain, and we see many more game nights here in our future. You probably won’t see our scores on the leaderboard just yet, but trust that the interactive rooms are our new favorite setting for a fun-filled night of competition with friends + family.

Work remotely from Freddo ATX

I’d always wondered what was inside this Victorian-style home on South Congress Avenue, but I didn’t expect it to be as wonderful as Freddo ATX. With a new food + drink menu, stellar happy hour deals, and plenty of cozy seating, we expect the ATXtoday newsletter to be written from this coffee shop many, many times.

Dine al fresco at Serenade American Brasserie

Multi-million dollar renovations at W Austin are complete, and with the revamp comes the newly opened Serenade American Brasserie. We loved watching the 2nd Street District bustle while eating housemade gougères, whipped chevre spread, blue crab benedict, and French toast with mascarpone. Psst — it’s also hosting a special Valentine’s Day dinner.
