🎨 Home is where the art is

A small outdoor micro gallery painted light blue with a clear acrylic roof. Inside, miniature colorful artworks are displayed, including illustrations and paintings, with one piece propped on a tiny easel. The setting features greenery and a residential background.

Calling all makers, art appreciators, and curators of curious things — we’ve found a picture-perfect way to enjoy art in Austin.

Free Little Art Galleries, aka FLAGs, are small boxes stationed around the country where locals can donate, take, or simply enjoy tiny art. They’re like Free Little Libraries or Sidewalk Joy, except dedicated to creativity.
There are currently 10 known FLAGs all over the Austin metropolitan area — and hundreds around the globe — which can be found using this map.
A small wooden art gallery box mounted on a triangular wooden stand, set among agave plants and greenery. The box has a transparent front and displays miniature art pieces, including paintings and drawings. Below, there is a sign labeled "Free Little Art Gallery" with a QR code and a small compartment containing informational cards.

There’s even a microscopic man enjoying the art at the We’re All Neighbors gallery in northeast Austin.

Here are some that we think are particularly special:
Psst — know of a gallery that isn’t listed on the map? Submit or update a FLAG.

What songs make you think of Austin? | Photo by @teamscreamy
It’s no secret that Austin has a world-class local music scene — after all, this is the Live Music Capital of the World — but how many resident musicians do you have on your playlist?

We want to spread the word about our local talent, so we made you a community playlist.

Of course we’ve included the classics — Willie Nelson, Black Pumas, Jackie Venson, Spoon, Gary Clark Jr., and Shakey Graves — but we hope you find some new songs, too. You’ll find many of these artists performing at festivals like SXSW, ACL, and Austin Blues Festival.

City Editor Figi’s favorites include “Belushi” by Chief Cleopatra, “empty streets, red lights blink” by Foxtales, and “Left-Handed Lover” by Lady Dan.

City Editor Morgan recommends giving “The Ones” by Riders Against the Storm, “Making Love” by Sir Woman, and “Will I Still Bloom?” by Half Dream a listen.

The Buy

New car insurance. Real talk — car insurance prices are expected to jump 22% by end of year, according to a recent study. It’s worth shopping around and comparing rates on Money’s Best Car Insurance list to make sure you’re getting the best price.

The Wrap

Timothée Chalamet loves Austin, and I love him for it. In case you missed it, he was spotted at a Longhorns game with Matthew McConaughey last month — he mentioned his visit to Austin several times during a podcast episode with Theo Von.
