Stumble into Sahara Lounge on a Saturday night and you’ll find plenty of Austinites on the dance floor, lively performers on the stage, and a free buffet dinner seasoned with West African spices.

That’s because every Saturday night at Sahara Lounge is Africa Night, a 21+ celebration of rhythm, culture, and connection. It’s this weekly tradition — plus a rich history and eclectic atmosphere — that helped earn the east Austin music club a spot on USATODAY’s newest list of the 27 best bars in the US.

What’s so special about Sahara Lounge?

  • It’s owned by two musicians: Eileen Bristol and her son, Topaz McGarrigle, who’s the lead singer in Austin-based band Golden Dawn Arkestra.
  • Its Sahara Slants cocktail is made with the Ghanaian spirit akpeteshie.
  • Recurring events on its robust calendar include Ladies Night and Body Rock ATX.
  • The bar boasts free billiards tables, an outdoor patio, and a food trailer outside.
