Average gas prices in Austin topped $4 for the first time in history last week — compared to last year’s average price of ~$2.70 per gallon, that’s a 55% increase.

Unfortunately, those prices likely aren’t going down any time soon. A recent report predicts prices could increase by as much as 30% by August, putting the national average at $6.20.

Are these prices getting you down? Us, too. That’s why we put together four ways to be fuel frugal in Austin.

Austin is rated as the 30th most walkable large city in the US on Walk Score. And some neighborhoods — including downtown, East Cesar Chavez, and around the UT campus — are classified as “walker’s paradises,” which means it’s time to break out your walking shoes. Ditch the drive and head to a nearby trail.
