We’re sad to share that this will be our last edition of ATXtoday — nah, we’re just foolin’ ya, Austin. It is April Fool’s Day, after all.

We gave this holiday some sincere consideration — including debating whether to hit you with some #fakenews or run our newsletter in reverse order — but in the end, we decided it was best to leave the joking around to the pros.

That’s why we’re highlighting five classic comedy clubs in Austin + upcoming shows to add to your calendar. Let’s get laughing.

Fallout Theater | 616 Lavaca St.

If you’re looking for weeknight shows, this just might be your next spot. This downtown venue has live shows seven nights per week. Turn in for long-form shows, standup, improv, and more.

Stop by for: Terminator: The Musical | Now-Sat., April 30 | 8 p.m. | $25+ | This comedy musical based on the 90s hit movie will have you in stitches.

Esther’s Follies | 525 E. Sixth St.

Believe it or not, the origin story for decades-old Esther’s Follies, begins with April Fool’s Day. A 1970s party at the then-Liberty Lunch turned into an improv extravaganza, spilling into the street in a kooky tribute to a certain aquatic-choreographer named Williams — Esther Williams. Flash forward 45 years, and the location has been called Texas’ answer to SNL.

Stop by for: Esther’s Follies | Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday | Times vary | $30+ | This rotating show is rich with political commentary, witty humor, and sometimes magic acts.

Cap City Comedy Club | 11506 Century Oaks Terrace, Bldg. B, Unit 100

This North Austin venue has hosted big names like Patton Oswalt, Vanessa Gonzalez, and Andrew Dismukes. When management announced the club would close its doors after 35 years in 2020, Austin comedy lovers mourned the loss — but not for long. The club reopened last fall in a new location at The Domain.

Stop by for: Avery Moore | Fri., April 8 | 7 p.m. | $15+ | Moore is a local comedian with experience performing at SXSW, the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival, and the Montréal Just for Laughs Festival.

Creek and the Cave | 611 E. 7th St.

A newcomer to Austin’s comedy scene, The Creek & The Cave opened in ATX last spring. However, the venue’s history is steeped in comedic royalty, with 14 years of working with artists like Donald Glover + Tim Dillon in New York City.

Stop by for: Punchlines: Comedy Battle | Tues., April 5 | 7 p.m. | $10 | It’s a fight to bring down the house at this competition-centered comedy show.

ColdTowne Theater | 4803 Airport Blvd.

A go-to spot for fans interested in alternative comedy, ColdTowne Theater has been filling stages with hilarious lineups since 2006. In addition to shows that run seven days per week, the venue also offers acting, improv, and sketch classes.

Stop by for: Comedy at the Clubhouse | Thursdays | 7 p.m. | $12 | Come for the comedy, stay for the ice cream, beer, and arcade games.
