The bluebonnets have arrived. We repeat: the bluebonnets have arrived.

We spotted our first bluebonnet of the season in Downtown Austin this week , in an unassuming patch of grass near West 3rd Street and North Lamar Boulevard.

If you’re wondering if the blooms are a little early, they are. Although it’s not unprecedented for Texas’ state flower to start its annual show in February, bluebonnet season typically begins in mid- to late March, peaking in early April.

The flowers also made an early appearance last year, which happens when warm, spring weather arrives early. (Of note: High temperatures are expected to break into the 80s next week.)
