News Notes

Outdoors

Flooding over the Fourth of July weekend caused water levels in Lake Travis to rise ~17 feet, bringing it to ~87% full. About a month ago, the lake was only ~45% full. (Austin American-Statesman)

Opening

Chef Laila Bazahm, known for Spanish restaurant El Raval, will open her second concept tomorrow. Siti is a Southeast Asian restaurant with nods to her Filipino heritage and time living in Singapore, but you can expect a menu that features housemade curry pastes, char-grilled meats, a raw bar, and inventive desserts. Make a reservation.

Sports

It’s time to get your head in the game, because Austin FC All-Star Brad Stuver and MLS All-Star Head Coach Nico Estévez will host a meet-and-greet from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 at Domain NORTHSIDE. Psst — stay tuned for a complete round-up of Austin FC’s All-Star Week festivities.

Closing

JewBoy Sub Shop will close its north Austin location on Burnet Road come Sunday, July 20. The owners announced the closure on Instagram, saying the lease is up and “other opportunities call,” which they plan to announce next month.

Regional

IKEA’s first small-scale, 35,000-sqft store is now open in San Marcos, drawing a handful of people who waited overnight for the grand opening. Upon opening, IKEA employees announced the store will donate $75,000 to Good360 to aid flood survivors. (KUT)

Watch

A large mound of fire ants was filmed while floating on Lake Travis during the floods. In case you didn’t know, ants are able to hook their legs and jaws together and float as a survival tactic, but you still shouldn’t disturb them because they can still bite in raft mode. (KXAN)

The Wrap

Unfortunately, I think my dreams of becoming a roller derby champion are dashed, on account of my family liking my face “the way it is.” Sigh.

That said, I think I’ll pick up roller dancing as a compromise, starting with practice at the newly renovated Playland Skate Center.
