A lively outdoor gathering at a quirky, art-filled venue in Austin, Texas. The space features bright pink triangular sun shades stretched overhead and matching pink umbrellas covering metal café tables and picnic benches. People of various ages sit at the tables, chatting, eating, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. A small stage at the center is framed by a corrugated metal roof and decorated with a bold black-and-white abstract mural; a DJ stands behind a booth with speakers on either side. Surrounding the space are lush green plants, string lights with pink bulbs, and a misting fan creating a fine haze for cooling. A white trailer with a large QR code and thank-you message for supporting The VORTEX sits to the left, blending into the venue’s artsy, community-focused vibe.

News Notes

Announced

The Hyatt Regency Austin is getting a makeover. The hotel on Lady Bird Lake’s shore began work on a property-wide transformation, including room redesigns and two new dining concepts. The hotel will remain open during renovations, which should be completed by September. Take a first look.

Development

Watch this clip of demolition crews bulldozing down the Austin Convention Center last week. In case you missed it, the convention center is being torn down to make way for a new, $1.6 billion facility that’ll be open by SXSW 2029. (Austin Business Journal)

Transit

Light rail is taking another step forward — the Austin Transit Partnership is seeking a design and construction contract for buildout. Firms can submit qualifications for the multibillion-dollar project through Thursday, July 3, and the contract will be awarded by early 2026. (Austin Business Journal)

Closing

Pour one out for Dear Dry Drinkery. The non-alcoholic bottle shop on East Cesar Chavez Street will permanently close on Sunday, June 22. The small business announced the closure via Instagram, citing economic woes as the culprit. Its remaining inventory (and furniture) will be on sale in the coming weeks.

Environment

Did you notice Lady Bird Lake looks a little cloudy? Crews began pouring a special clay mixture into the water yesterday, marking the final phase of a five-year program to fight toxic algae. More applications are planned for July + August.

A modern restaurant interior featuring a long green terrazzo bar with round leather stools, open kitchen in the background, and a row of two-person booths with olive green cushions and white tiled walls. Warm lighting, floor-to-ceiling windows, and wood accents create an airy, inviting atmosphere.

The wait is over. One of Austin’s most popular brunch restaurants opens a new location on South Lamar Boulevard today.

Here’s what to know about Paperboy South.

What’s on the menu?

You’ll find returning Paperboy favorites (like the Texas Hash, Paperboy Pancake, and B.E.C. Sandwich) on the menu, alongside homemade pastries, coffee by Superthing, and boozy beverages. Plus, this location’s larger kitchen will allow chefs to experiment and roll out new dishes, so stay tuned.

Inside the space

Sit at the custom green terrazzo bar for a front-row view of the kitchen bustle, or cozy up in a two-person booth flanked by tile walls.

But wait, there’s more

A covered patio will provide space for another 65 guests, while a walk-up window will allow folks to pick up to-go orders with ease.
