“We’re just holding onto each other”: The Tiarras on performing at ACL for the first time

Music has always been a family affair for The Tiarras, an Austin-based band made up of three sisters.

The Baltierra sisters — Tori on guitar and vocals, Sophia on drums, and Tiffany on bass — have been playing music since they were children. More than a decade after their career began, they’re gearing up to play their first-ever ACL Festival at the Tito’s Handmade Vodka stage at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Tori, Sophia, and Tiffany (who are fourth-generation Austinites) grew up in a home where music was central. Their father was a DJ and their mother raised them on diverse playlists, including artists like Black Sabbath, Norah Jones, No Doubt, Ramón Ayala, and Selena.

The Tiarras have a new album — in which they delve into topics like grief, love, nature, and spirituality — slated to drop within the next year.

The trio began performing as young teenagers at small venues and events like the Pecan Street Festival, the Austin Ice Cream Festival, and the first-ever SXSW Sydney festival in Australia.

The sisters said that things started speeding up after they began posting on TikTok. The signs? These days, people drive from out of state to see them perform and always line up at the merch booth after their shows.

“We’re kind of surprised each time we get this new feeling of like, ‘wow, we’re making it,’” Tori said. “We also get kind of scared, because obviously, there’s no rulebook to this, and there’s not a lot of all sister bands, or all sister Latina bands that we’ve seen. We’re just holding on to each other.”

If you’ve never heard their music before, the three of them recommend listening to their songs “Soy Chingona” and “They Don’t See Us.” When they’re not on stage, you might find them in the crowd for Khruangbin, Dua Lipa, and of course...

“Norah Jones for sure,” Tiffany said. “I was most excited when I saw her name on the lineup with ours.”

News Notes
Closing
  • Outer Heaven Disco Club will likely close its doors by March 2025, as the venue’s landlord allegedly declined to renew its lease. The closure was announced via Instagram in a post that states the club will be replaced with a luxury condo development. It is unclear whether Outer Heaven will relocate.
Travel
  • Delta Air Lines will launch a new nonstop route from Austin to San Francisco next summer. Dubbed the “nerd bird” flight, the daily route will begin on June 8 and comes right on the heels of the airline announcing five new routes last month. (Austin Business Journal)
Number
  • $535. That’s the lowest price you’d have to shell out to buy a ticket on the UT side of the upcoming Red River Rivalry between the Longhorns and OU, though you could sit on the OU side for around $396. The game will take place at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 12. (KVUE)
Development
  • A restoration and repair project on the Old Lampasas Dam in northwest Austin will begin later this month. The $15 million project on the dam, which was built in 1984 and damaged by a storm in 2010, is expected to last about a year and a half. (KVUE)

  • October is the fifth annual Hill Country Night Sky Month — a celebration of the dark sky community and starry skies over the region. Throughout the month, participants can attend stargazing events and learn about light pollution alleviation. (KXAN)

    A new, retro bar + restaurant called The Flower Shop is coming to Austin.

    Hearkening back to cozy, residential design trends of the 1960s and 1970s, The Flower Shop will open at 1300 E. 7th St. in the former space of Wilder Wood Restaurant and Bar on Thursday, Oct. 10. The building was built in 1922 and opened as one of the first tortilla factories in Texas.

    This will be Eldridge Hospitality’s first foray outside of New York City, where the first location of The Flower Shop and sister restaurant Little Ways is located.

    Inside, guests will find a warm-toned dining room and floral cocktail area. Outside, visitors can sit at the ground floor’s beer garden or the rooftop deck on the second floor.

    On the menu, expect elevated comfort food like cauliflower steak with quinoa and wasabi deviled eggs, plus natural wines and an extensive cocktail menu.
