How many Olympic medals have Austin athletes won so far?

It’s hard to believe the Paris 2024 Olympics are near their end — the games run through Sunday, Aug. 11.

There’s much to celebrate for athletes with ties to Austin and athletes from Texas as a whole already — they’ve claimed more medals than many countries.

Let’s take a look at which local Olympians are bringing home gold, silver, and bronze medals so far. For more Olympic news, keep up with Team USA via KVUE.

  • Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ will not reopen its Buda restaurant, owners confirmed. The barbecue restaurant, which started in Austin as a food truck, originally closed (with plans to reopen) earlier this year due to owing ~$2.3 million to the City of Buda and landlords. The space will be overtaken by a new eatery. (KVUE)

  • The beaver is coming to San Marcos. Buc-ee’s will open a San Marcos Travel Center, beginning construction on Tuesday, Oct. 1 with plans to open in December 2025. The project is expected to cost ~$47 million and include 120 gas pumps and 100 EV charging spots. (KXAN)

  • Texas State University is eyeing international expansion into Mexico. If the university’s board of regents vote this week to approve a proposed 10-year, $10 million contract for the satellite campus, the facility would be built in Querétaro, Mexico. (KVUE)

  • It’s time to get behind the wheel — One Line Racing Center is now open at 13000 N. I-35, Ste. #106 in north Austin. The venue offers simulated car racing and motorsports experiences, complete with haptic feedback and immersive motion systems, starting at $30 per race. (Austin Community Impact)

  • Lions Municipal Golf Course — aka MUNY — will celebrate its 100th anniversary in October. The Lions Club of Austin and the MUNY Conservancy plan to celebrate with a Centennial Celebration, with an open-to-the-public parade, flyovers, and charity golf tournament. (KXAN)

  • Earlier this week, we asked our readers when Austin started celebrating Pride in August. Only 8% of respondents answered correctly: 2015. Austin holds its Pride parade in August to cut down on competition with other festivals and garner more volunteers, many of which are college students.
