Whether you’re a Capital City native or a relative newcomer, there are just some things every Austinite understands to be true.
We asked our readers to share Austin’s unwritten rules, from common city knowledge to relatable trends and local lingo.
You won’t find these rules in a handbook, but they are undoubtedly absorbed by the community — and if you’re not from Austin, some of these might be a little difficult to explain.

Plan Ahead
Twenty One Pilots | Tuesday, Sept. 3 | 8 p.m. | The Moody Center | $60-$175 | Austin will host the “Clancy” world tour with the band’s first new album since 2021.
The City of Austin and CapMetro are bringing pedestrian and cycling safety improvements to Downtown Austin, including adding protected bike lanes from 4th Street to Cesar Chavez Street. Construction is expected to begin this month and wrap up by the end of the year. (KXAN)
Festival
Local bands Grupo Fantasma, Superfònicos, Como Las Movies, and more will perform at MeadowFest in support of mental health. The festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 (aka Meadow Goodman Mental Health Awareness Day) and ticket sales benefit Out Youth Austin and The SIMS Foundation.
State
The new school year is almost here, and so is tax-free weekend. Most school supplies, backpacks, clothing, and shoes will be free of sales tax at Texas businesses from Friday, Aug. 9 until midnight Sunday, Aug. 11 — learn more about how to shop.
Olympics
Austinites can claim two new gold medalists: former Longhorns Scottie Scheffler in golf and Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia (the first-ever medal for the country) in track and field. Keep up with Team USA via KVUE.
Number

List
At least 25,931households earning more than $200,000 per year moved to Texas in 2023, according to a study from SmartAsset. Texas was the second highest on the list, with a net inflow of 8,260 high-earning households, as 17,671 moved out of the state.

Venues closing — for now
Three Austin venues announce closures — for now

A handful of local venues recently announced they will close down, at least for now. However, all hope is not lost, as there’s a chance they will reopen.
Giddy Ups | Located in far south Austin, honky-tonk Giddy Ups will shutter on Sunday, Aug. 11 due to a change in the lease. Owner Michael Morgan hopes to relocate the venue but has yet to nail down a location.
Ego’s | As property owners plan to demolish its building, South Congress Avenue karaoke bar Ego’s could close soon, but will be open through the end of the month. The bar, which originally opened in 1979, announced the closure on social media, saying it might reopen in the future.
The Lost Well | According to a Facebook post by owner Marcello Murphy, this punk and metal venue will likely close within the coming months. Murphy said he plans to make an official announcement soon.
