Don’t let the name fool you — there’s nothing small about Little Amal.
Meaning “hope” in Arabic, Little Amal is a 12-ft tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee and was created by Handspring Puppet Company to raise awareness about the experiences of displaced people.
Since July 2021, Little Amal has traversed 6,000+ miles across 97 cities in 15 countries and hosted ~300 free events on her “The Walk” tour. The 38-city North American leg of her tour — which started in Boston and will end in Tapachula, Mexico — will add an additional 11,000 miles to her trek once complete.
Get ready Austinites, she’s making a stop in the Capital City on Friday, Oct. 20 with two free events. Here’s where to catch her:
Get ready, get steady, DANCE!| 5 p.m. | Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon St., Austin
Amal is running late for a dance class in Austin. After a quick health check-up with the Interfaith Action of Central Texas, she will join a beautiful welcoming dance with Ballet Austin.
An honor of bravery from Bat City | 6:30 p.m. | Texas State Capitol South Lawn, 1100 Congress Ave., Austin
In partnership with Glass Half Full Theatre, Cave Lady Studios, Creative Action, and American Artists Project, Amal will discover the cloud of bats that live and migrate through Austin’s community.
Want to walk a little further with Little Amal? You can follow her south to San Antonio, where she will host four more events on Saturday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 22.

Friday the 13th is approaching — how do you keep the good luck flowing? | Gif via Giphy
Knock on wood — if the idea of Friday the 13th makes you a little uneasy, now may be a good time to stock up on good luck protections like four-leaf clovers and salt.
The second Friday the 13th of 2023 is next week. While the occasion happens every ~212 days, this one feels particularly ominous since it falls during the haunting month of October.
Superstitious folks all know that walking under ladders — which supposedly stems from Ancient Egyptian beliefs — and breaking mirrors (a Grecian concern) cause misfortune, but what Austin-specific actions would bring about bad luck to locals?
Neglecting to share sunscreen at Barton Springs Pool? Blocking the box on Cesar Chavez Street?
Alternatively, what could an Austinite do to restore good luck into their lives: Reference the Armadillo World Headquarters in conversation? Correctly pronounce Mount Bonnell three times?
Let us know your thoughts and we’ll share our collaborative guide for navigating local superstitions on Friday the 13th. You know, just in case.

What’s something an Austinite could do to bring themselves bad luck (or good luck)?
Alrighty y’all, I’m gearing up to tackle ACL live from festival grounds.
If you’re attending the festival weekend one, give us a follow on Instagram because I’m giving away festive souvenir bracelets to ATXtoday fans. If you’re not going to ACL, consider attending one of these other festivals.
