Take an accessible hike on one of these trails in Austin

The outdoors are for everybody — and there are plenty of hikes around Austin that are friendly to wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids. Get some fresh air on three of our favorite accessible trails.

Mueller Lake and Southeast Greenway, 4550 Mueller Blvd.
A three-mile loop around Mueller Lake Park, this trail borders waterfront seating, a playground, a food truck park, an outdoor stage, and several grassy recreation areas. Although parts of this trail are packed gravel, most of it is paved and gently sloped (5% grade or less).

Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, Multiple access points
The boardwalk running along Lady Bird Lake is a favorite recreational spot for Austinites. Several bridges crossing the lake connect the trail in multiple points, meaning the 10-mile loop can be reduced into shorter loops as needed.

Southern Walnut Creek Trail, 5200 Bolm Rd.
For a longer hike, take this 7.3-mile trail through foliage and along the water. The paved path is typically 8 ft wide and relatively flat at a 5% or less grade. The trail runs from Govalle Park to the Walnut Creek Sports Park at Johnny Morris Road and Daffan Lane.

What’s your go-to wheelchair-accessible trail? Let us know where we should explore next.

From the editor
Hey, Austin. Nice to meet ya. I’m here for the day to help out while Figi takes some well-deserved time off.

Although I’m based in Chicago, I’ve maintained for many years now that my favorite travel experience — including international trips — was my Texas road trip back in 2017. On the way to Big Bend National Park, I stopped in Austin; Barton Springs and (of course) H-E-B were major highlights.
