17 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops that opened this summer

Summer 2024 brought dozens of new food and beverage offerings to the Capital City — we rounded up a few that caught our eyes.

These days, blink and you’ll miss all the new business openings in Austin.

This summer brought dozens of new coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and lounges to the food + beverage scene — here’s a few that we’re excited to see.

Bar Gimmicks | Slinging “cheap beer, great food, and stiff drinks,” this north Austin bar opened in July and pays homage to Chicago cuisine with pizza, wings, and ramen deviled eggs.

Bird Dog Pit BBQ | Located on Burnet Road, this restaurant’s new take on barbecue features all the classic meats, plus vegetarian options, sides like Frito pie and Hatch green chile mac and cheese, and an upcoming focus on wild game.

The Break Room | The daytime alter ego to east Austin bar Bosses Office, The Break Room serves up all-day breakfast, sandwiches, coffee, and daytime cocktails before evening sets in.

We dare you not to take a dip in this 21+ pool.

Cabana Club | Take your next meeting poolside at this coffee shop, coworking space, and outdoor lounge that sports a cocktail pool, covered patio, food trucks, and two bars.

Chalmers | Housed inside a converted Shell gas station, this West Texas-inspired bar, restaurant, and music hub offers bevs + bites from the folks behind the Armadillo Den.

The Dead Rabbit | The fan-favorite pub in NYC expanded to old 6th Street over the summer, serving whiskeys, coffee-based cocktails, and Irish comfort food (think scotch eggs, corned beef sliders, and bangers + mash) with a Texas twist.

Desnudo | Using beans from small family-run farms, you can find the new coffee trailer at Fareground in Downtown Austin, serving its signature Shoyu Butterscotch and White Vanilla Miso Lattes.

Two golden-brown arancini balls served on a white plate. The arancini are topped with a creamy sauce, grated Parmesan cheese, and microgreens.

We enjoyed the mushroom arancini during a visit to Fig Italian Kitchen + Bar.

Fig Italian Kitchen & Bar | Helmed by Michelin Plate awarded chef Cole Fitzgerald, this modern Italian restaurant puts a unique twist on traditional flavors and specializes in fresh pasta, wood-fired pizza, and seafood.

Kramer’s | Lovers of agave spirits — think tequila + mezcal — will find a home at this new venture by Hopsquad Brewing Co., which also serves small bites and is dog-friendly.

A cozy dive bar with a Christmas theme. A large Christmas wreath hangs from the ceiling, adorned with ornaments and lights. The bar counter is lined with red and green stools and features a wooden backsplash and shelves stocked with liquor.

Lala’s South Pole welcomes all who like to listen to Christmas music and watch Christmas movies all year round.

Lala’s South Pole | It’s always Christmas at the second location of Lala’s Little Nugget, which features a clock that counts down to the holiday, wintry beverages, cheery decorations, and twinkly lights.

Ling Wu Asian Restaurant | Located in the Rosedale neighborhood, the fifth restaurant by Austin chef Ling Qi Wu will focus on dim sum dishes and the flavors of Beijing.

A plastic cup filled with an iced coffee beverage. The drink is topped with a generous layer of whipped cream and sprinkled with a dusting of cinnamon or cocoa powder. The cup has the branding "Neighbourhood Café" printed on it, along with an address in Austin. The drink is placed on a light-colored, textured surface, possibly a marble or stone countertop.

Neighbourhood Café | Next door to The Dead Rabbit, the second location of this cafe (and first in the country) is serving creative caffeinated drinks — like the Iced Tiramisu + Turkish Spice Mint — and healthy brunch bites.

Recreation | From the minds behind Ma’Coco, this spot is a new hub for sports, drinks, and dancing. With a full brunch, lunch, dinner, and cocktail menu, Recreation opens at 11 a.m. and stays open late for a day-to-night experience.

Sightseer Coffee Roasters | Now open inside Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, this women-owned coffee shop serves outside-the-box drinks and was created by two people who met while working at Greater Goods Coffee.

Taano House | Try some alternatives to alcoholic beverages at this botanical bar that serves tinctures made from tea, mushrooms, fruits, and kava.
