Did you know the popular Japanese-inspired bar Domo Alley-Gato has officially reopened? After shuttering its doors in 2020 during the pandemic, the bar was used as an outdoor dining space for Ramen Tatsu-Ya, its next door neighbor.

This East Austin spot has now returned as a bar + events space. We’ve got the details on what you can expect.

Guests will notice that the establishment’s design draws inspiration from Japanese standing bars. These are known as “tachinomiya” + “yokocho,” which is a Japanese word from the post-World War II era meaning “alleyways off to the side of a main street.” In Japan, these pedestrian alleyways usually contain small, connected pubs + bars.

While you’re at Domo Alley-Gato, there’s a good chance you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the lively nightlife setting often found in some of Japan’s largest cities.

Have you been missing the bar’s classic menu items? Don’t worry, you’ll still find fan favorites on the menu such as the Kirin Ichiban Cold Capsyep, those frozen drinks — and the Karē Ban Ban Dog, a teriyaki beef frank in a fried panko brioche bun topped with Domo Karē chili. Check out the full menu here.

If you like creating your own spirited drink, add this place to your list. Order the DIY Chu-Hi, which will allow you to select a house tonic + spirit. We’re eyeing the “Gold” flavor with ginger, saffron, and szechuan pepper.
