Phillumeny. That’s the word for collecting matchbooks and matchboxes — a hobby that has become popular on social media in recent years and taken Austin by storm.
The trend itself is not new, matchbooks have been used as a form of marketing since the mid-1890s, but collecting them is back in a big way. Figi here — I’m one of many people I know who have started collecting matches, and it’s a thrill to pick up a new souvenir from a beloved locale.
There are hundreds of businesses that offer collectible matchbooks — as evidenced by Matches of Austin’s interactive map — but here are a few to get you started on your new hobby.
