The historic Henry Green Madison Cabin in Rosewood Park is going to take a little vacation.

The cabin — which was built in 1863 by the first Black Austin City Council member Henry Green Madison for his wife and nine children — is in the midst of a restoration process through a partnership between Austin Parks Foundation and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department that was announced in 2023.

Over the next few months, the cabin will be disassembled and restored at a warehouse. Once the necessary work is complete, it will be reassembled in Rosewood Park and open to the public.

Some fun facts about the cabin:

  • It was originally built at 807 E. 11th St.
  • The cabin was donated to the city in 1973.
  • It was designated a Texas Historical Marker in 1974 and City of Austin Landmark in 1976.
