We know it’s technically still April, but in just a few short days it’ll be one of the biggest holidays in Mexican culture — Cinco de Mayo.

The holiday honors Mexico’s victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Second Franco-Mexican War didn’t end that day, but the battle became a symbol of resistance against foreign powers.

If you’re celebrating this year, here’s where to eat, drink, and dance in ATX.

Celebrate

Mexican culture runs deep in Austin, so it’s no surprise Austinites put together several celebrations for this year’s holiday. Here are a few ways to join in on the fun:

Cinco de Mayo with La Banda Besitos, El Combo Osuro y Mala Nota | Thurs., May 5 | 6 p.m. | The Far Out Lounge & Stage | $10 | Dance to Selena’s best music + local artists’ sounds.

Fiesta Austin Cinco de Mayo | Sat., May 7 | 10 a.m. | 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St. | Free+ | This annual event includes vendors, live music, onsite artists, and games.

Eat + drink

Cinco de Mayo is about much more than delicious food — but the food doesn’t hurt.

We recently asked our readers what their favorite Mexican food restaurants around Austin were. Here’s what they said. (P.S.: One of City Editor London’s favorite spots for Mexican food is Nixta Taqueria — if you haven’t tried the beet “tartare” tostada, now is the time.)

I like @elalma_atx and @tamale_house” — @lifewithyvetti

Angie’s on 7th st” — @cdtorrez2022

“Chuys - just celebrated their 40th Anniversary with a yummy blackberry margarita and yummy tacos!” — @victoriadeitch

Enchiladas Y Mas on Anderson Lane!!!” — Judy M.

“Matt’s El Rancho for best time with good food, La Cocina de Consuelo for best breakfast, Tamale house/Juan in a million/Taco joint are up there too… but I’ll go Lichas Cantina for best food.” — @atlas_bugg_atx

Did we miss anything? In a city like Austin, of course we did. Share how you’ll be celebrating. 🎉
