Did you get fooled? Austin-based businesses took the pranks up a notch on April Fools’ Day this year. Here are some of the best ones we saw while scrolling our feeds.
CapMetro Ferry
The folks behind CapMetro brought a new mode of transportation to the table: ferry service across Lady Bird Lake with nine stops along the channel. While it isn’t real, imagine taking the ferry to ACL Festival in the fall.
Traveling can be stressful, and no one knows that better than the staff at Austin Bergstrom-International Airport. In the spirit of keeping calm Texas-style, this year’s prank was rolling out an armadillo pet therapy program, complete with critters who are skilled in scurrying, tail-wagging, and rolling around. Actually, this one doesn’t sound so bad.
Country musician Charley Crockett will pop into Waterloo Records for a performance and signing at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. Pro tip: Arrive early, because capacity limits apply and space will fill up fast.
Austinite
James Beard “Best Chef: Texas” nominee and Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group CEO Tavel Bristol-Joseph will be the featured speaker at the Downtown Austin Alliance’s Future of Downtown event in May. The annual event brings community members together to look forward to Downtown’s bright future.
This month is Earth Month, and the City of Austin is celebrating with the Earth Month Zero-Waste Fest on Saturday, April 4. You can also help beautify the city by signing up for The Trail Conservancy’s Earth Day Clean Up on Friday, April 24.
Open
Calling all thrifters — San Antonio-based store Thrift @ The Warehouse opened a location off of North Lamar Boulevard. The store operates on a “zero waste” policy by donating + recycling extra textiles. (Community Impact)
Outdoors
Zilker Botanical Gardens’ annual Woodland Faerie Trail will bring an extra dose of whimsy to the gardens starting Saturday, May 9 through mid-July. If you have some pixie dust to spare, you can register to become a faerie architect and create a piece of the trail.
