News Notes

Announced

The Hyatt-owned South Congress Hotel will close around the end of May for a year-long renovation and let all of its staff go. The hotel, which is located directly across from the Kendra Scott Flagship, is expected to reopen in early 2027. (Austin American-Statesman)

Civic

Austin City Council voted to create a new land-use category that would allow businesses to operate at residential properties. Accessory Commercial Units will be allowed to operate on porches and front yards, taking up no more than 200 sqft. (Austin Business Journal)

Eat

Much to our dismay, none of Austin’s James Beard semifinalists advanced to the finals, with one exception: Austin-based Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph is still in the running for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker at San Antonio restaurant Nicosi. We still think all of our semifinalists deserve the gold.

Edu

Austin ISD will close Blackshear Elementary, aka the oldest operating elementary school in Austin, and consolidate students with Oak Springs Elementary in January 2028. (KUT)

Closed

After around one-and-a-half years in business, Colorado Street bar Tiger Lilly closed down yesterday. The bar’s owners didn’t mention a reason for the sudden closure.

Biz

The team behind Better Half Coffee and Hold Out Brewing is taking over north Austin coffee shop + bar Turnstile, which will retain its brand. So what’s changing? Turnstile will feature more Hold Out beer, expand food service, and begin serving Better Half goodies.

Holiday

Chag sameach. Passover (or Pesach) begins at sundown today and runs through Wednesday, April 8. Congregation Beth Israel will host a Passover Community Seder on Saturday, April 4 for $36 per family. Registration ends at 6 p.m. today.

Today Is

April Fools’ Day. You won’t find any tricks in our newsletter today, but I’ll share any good pranks I see around town in tomorrow’s. If you see any, send them my way.

Festival

The Flaming Lips, Thee Sacred Souls, The Black Angels, Como Las Movies, Adrian Quesada, and more musical artists will take the stage at the 2026 edition of Austin Psych Fest. Tickets for the May festival start at $92.

Event Spotlight

Austin Shakespeare will perform “Much Ado About Nothing” for this year’s Shakespeare in the Park run. The free show will take place Thursday-Sunday from May 7 to May 24 at Zilker Park.

The production sets the comedy in 1950s Italy, following Beatrice and Benedick, who swear not to fall in love, and the instant romance of Hero and Claudio. Guests in the audience are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic while they enjoy the show.

The Buy

A trendy square-cut tank under $15 that’s a great wardrobe basic for spring and summer. It’s double-lined, soft, and has the right amount of stretch to flatter curves. Stock up in black, white, or both.

The Wrap

As a fan of both Hold Out and Turnstile, I’m pleased as punch to hear about the business takeover. I would be absolutely thrilled if I could get Better Half’s cauliflower tots at Turnstile, in case the Hold Out team is reading.
