Did you know Huston-Tillotson University in east Austin was established in 1875, making it the oldest institution of higher learning in the city?
This historically Black university — also known as an HBCU — was originally named Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute after Reverend George Jeffrey Tillotson, who chartered the school.
The school’s made a major impact on Austin’s footprint, so we wanted to share some of its notable alumni in honor of Black History Month.
Azie Morton | The 36th Treasurer of the United States, Morton served during the Carter administration, and is the first and only Black person to have ever held the position.
Norman Scales Sr. | Scales became a Tuskegee Airman during World War II and the first Black pilot commissioned as a second lieutenant from Austin. Scales Street in the Mueller neighborhood is named in his honor.
Jackie Robinson | The famous baseball player was head of the athletics department of Samuel Huston College from 1944 to 1945 before rising to prominence in his baseball career.

Psst — keep you eyes peeled for even more stadium eats in our upcoming Austin FC guide.

I was finally able to visit La La Land Kind Cafe, which had been on my to-do list for months, last Friday. I ordered the iced lavender bloom latte and sat on the patio to do a little work — it was a great way to spend the morning.
