Good news, tennis fans: Austin’s largest women’s professional sporting event is right around the corner.

From February 21 to March 1, the ATX Open brings world-class WTA Tour competition to Westwood Country Club, serving up elite global talent and an elevated fan experience in the heart of Texas.

As one of the first US stops on the 2026 WTA Tour calendar, the ATX Open offers a rare chance to see top stars, including reigning champion Jessica Pegula, right in our backyard.

Weather

Though temperatures warmed to above freezing yesterday, some roads were still covered in icy splotches. Temperatures are forecast to stay above freezing until Saturday, Jan. 31. Psst — test your knowledge about Austin’s lowest recorded temperature with the quiz below.

Development

The new Wishbone Bridge and Unity Underpass along the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail is poised to open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. City officials will begin the debut with some remarks before opening it up to explore. (KXAN)

Sugar, spice, and everything nice. Big Top Candy Shop, the beloved sweets purveyor on South Congress Avenue, plans to open a second location in Hyde Park at the end of this month. Owners will celebrate with candy tastings in the new space on Saturday, Jan. 31. (Community Impact)
Mr. Beast — aka Jimmy Donaldson, the internet sensation known for outrageous challenge videos — gifted a one-of-a-kind robotic hand to 12-year-old Kai Pollnitz from Georgetown, who was born without a right hand. Pollnitz’s mother kept the secret until Donaldson was able to surprise him. (KXAN)

Concert

Country music star George Strait added two more shows to his schedule at The Moody Center. Now, he will perform on Thursday, April 9; Saturday, April 11; Friday, May 15; and Saturday, May 16.

State

The population in Texas grew more than any other state in the US for the third year in a row, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The Lone Star State’s population grew by 391,243 people, making it the second-most populous state behind California. (KXAN)
