News Notes

Seasonal

Don’t forget to set your clocks back — daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, ushering in brighter mornings and earlier sunsets. Need help adjusting to the change? Enjoying a sun-soaked morning at a local coffee shop should do the trick.

Mansion Monday

Texans’ favorite way to splurge? Hitting the water. A new study found yacht charters are the state’s most popular luxury experience. As for us, we’d take our luxury dollars to dry land — preferably toward a piece of Austin real estate. (Time Out)

Pets

Did you know that black cats are less likely to be adopted? Now Halloween is gone, we want to make sure that the Capital City’s adoptable inky felines get the love they deserve all year round. Checkmate, Mena, Little Larva 26, Wii, and Double Dog Dare 22 are all awaiting adoption at Austin Pets Alive!. (PubMed Central)

Traffic

Drivers in Austin were delayed ~73 million hours by traffic in 2024. Per person, that amounts to 64 hours, and data shows the most congestion happens between 3 and 6 p.m. Let us know how you spend your time in traffic, so we can help the folks stuck on I-35.

Eat

Are you looking forward to a turkey tortilla soup? That’s Texas’s most unique Thanksgiving recipe, according to The Food Network. The dish combines leftover turkey with avocado and the classic Tex-Mex soup. Keep it local by buying the ingredients at one of ATX’s best farmers markets.

Outdoors

Prolific mountaineer Jim Morrison recently became the first person to ski down the Hornbein Couloir — an exceptionally steep section of Mount Everest’s north face. National Geographic is releasing a documentary about Morrison’s death-defying feat, with no release date yet set. A local hike is enough of a challenge for us.

Jobs

Whether you’re a small business looking to grow your team or a large company filling a key role, our Job Board can connect you with engaged, qualified locals who are ready to work. Post your open roles for free + watch the applications roll in.

🥣 The bowl is half-full

Me and mine always make sure to get a picture in the giant soup pot. | Photo by ATXtoday

Have your soup and eat it too at the Central Texas Food Bank’s annual Austin Empty Bowl Project fundraiser, which is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Here’s how it works: Visitors sift through thousands of unique bowls made by Austin potters and pick their favorites for $30 each. After they purchase their bowls, patrons can fill them with a soup of their choice made by local restaurants.

Figi here — I look forward to attending Empty Bowl Project every year with my family. We’ve collected more than a dozen bowls — scroll down below to see my favorite one.

The Buy

A food warming mat — perfect for holiday hosting so your dishes don’t get cold before serving. It features seven temperature settings and is made from premium silicone to provide uniform heating.

The Wrap

Today’s edition by: Figi

Alright, this bowl looks really small in the photo, but I promise it is normal-sized. Every year I look for the potter who makes bowls with a simple, stamped bunny signature on the bottom, but I’ve never been able to find out who makes them. If you have any idea, let me know.
