Calling all makers, art appreciators, and curators of curious things — we’ve found a picture-perfect way to enjoy art in Austin.

Free Little Art Galleries, aka FLAGs, are small boxes stationed around the country where locals can donate, take, or simply enjoy tiny art. They’re like Free Little Libraries or Sidewalk Joy, except dedicated to creativity.

Here are a few ways you can enjoy FLAGs in our community.
There are currently 10 known FLAGs all over the Austin metropolitan area — and hundreds around the globe — which can be found using this map.

Announced

It appears that Formula 1 is here to stay in Austin, as Travis County records show that the race will extend its contract from 2027 to 2034. The United States Grand Prix’s last Austin extension was in 2022. (Austin Business Journal)

Opening

Local burger mini-chain Hopdoddy will open a new location in Pflugerville’s Stone Hill Town Center sometime in late 2026. (CultureMap)

Bird Bird Biscuit’s South Lamar Boulevard location is holding a soft opening phase 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. today and tomorrow. Stop in to be one of the first people to experience the new shop.

A new exhibit called “T. rex: The Ultimate Predator” opens at the Bullock Texas State History Museum this Saturday, Oct. 18. The exhibition, which is on loan from the American Museum of Natural History, features models, fossil casts, and interactive pieces.

Pets

Austin Pets Alive! will hold a “Superpowers of the Underdogs” adoption event surrounding pups with disabilities on Saturday, Oct. 18. Dogs available for meet-and-greets include Kanga with a tripod superpower, Shea Butter the wheelie dog, and a wobbly dog named Puffy.

Sports

Two Longhorn football players will say goodbye to the team. Running back Jerrick Gibson and kicker Will Stone will leave the program, though no reason for their departure was listed. (KXAN)

Competitive eater Joey Chestnut, who is known for winning the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest, will visit the State Fair of Texas on Saturday, Oct. 18. Chestnut will be the halftime entertainment during the State Fair Clásico. (The Dallas Morning News)
