Can you smell the chile roasting? | Photos by ATXtoday
It’s Hatch Green Chile season and Austinites are getting in the spirit. Did you know The Land of Enchantment — aka our neighboring state of New Mexico — produces 77% of chile peppers in the US?
If you’re an Enchant-plant to Austin, or you just appreciate green chile, you’re going to want to stop by Central Market for the Hatch Hall of Flame from now until Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Figi here. I stopped by last week to get chile and a ristra, which I was really surprised to see in stock. Employees will be outside roasting the chile from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, but now is also the time to get Hatch Green Chile-infused queso, blue corn tortilla cookies, tortillas, chocolate, and so much more.

As many of you readers know, I grew up in Albuquerque, NM, which makes me uniquely qualified to share the news of green chile season with you. In the Duke City, green chile season is considered the unofficial start of fall, and the scent of roasting chiles takes over the whole town. It makes me a little emotional to smell it.
