There’s never a dull moment in Downtown Austin, which is why Mayor Kirk Watson calls it ā€œAustin’s living room.ā€

Downtown is under constant development and ~139,000 people walk through Austin’s living room every day.

The nickname begs the question: If Downtown is Austin’s living room, what does that make the rest of the city? Here’s what we think.

Austin’s garage: The Cathedral of Junk

Let’s be honest, the garage is usually where all of our junk is cast, making the Cathedral of Junk an apt comparison. Austin’s Cathedral of Junk has its fair share of treasures — just like the typical Austinite’s garage.

Austin’s backyard: Zilker Park

Austinites deserve none other than the crown jewel of Austin’s park system for a backyard. It’s the home to many of the city’s beloved gatherings, including ABC Kite Fest and the annual ACL Festival.

Keep your umbrella nearby — rain is on the radar for this evening and Wednesday. Some models indicate that Austin will receive 0.42 inches of rainfall and there is currently little risk of severe storms. (KVUE)

Ranked

Congrats, new grads. Austin is the No. 1 rental market for recent college graduates, according to a report from Realtor.com. Austin makes a good home for new alumni due to its 18.9% rent-to-income ratio, high percentage of entry-level jobs, and low unemployment rate.

Outdoors

East Austin’s Blair Woods Nature Preserve is currently closed due to damage caused by last week’s microburst storm. It’s unclear when the 10-acre sanctuary will reopen, but caretakers for the site are bracing for ~$20,000 in expenses to repair trails and remove trees. (KVUE)

Austinites who use curbside recycling can now recycle food + beverage containers and coated paper products, such as coffee cups, takeout containers, and paper plates. Learn more about what can go in your blue bin.

Post of the Day

We’re still reeling from our time at ATX TV Festival, where we witnessed the first Texas Made Award being presented to the cast of ā€œLandmanā€ in a partnership with Media for Texas. The show was filmed mostly in Fort Worth (hey, FTWtoday), but the cast had plenty of kind words for the Capital City.

The Wrap

Phew, what a busy weekend. We spent a lot of time at the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel (aka the second-oldest hotel in Austin) during ATX TV Festival, and if you’ve never been, I highly recommend a visit. The Roaring Fork served us some delicious enchiladas, plus, the bar and wraparound terrace are a great place to take in city views.
