Between characters from “The White Lotus” mentioning Austin and “1923" making a splash by bringing production to town, we’ve got the silver screen on the brain.

Dozens of productions have been filmed here in the Capital City — here are just a few of our favorites.

“Fear the Walking Dead” | Starring: Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane, and Cliff Curtis
In this spin-off of “The Walking Dead,” you’ll be able to peep the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium, Lakeline Mall, the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, and Brackenridge Hospital.

“Friday Night Lights” | Starring: Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler
Next time you watch, try to spot locales like the Broken Spoke, Capitol Chevrolet, Baker Center, and Pflugerville High School’s Kuempel Stadium.

“Love & Death” | Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, and Krysten Ritter
Some notable filming locations include The Paramount Theatre, the Austin American-Statesman offices, and Garrison Municipal Pool.

Customize every inch of your kitchen in 3D

Presented by Lowe's

Howdy ATX, it’s your favorite newsletter team here, full of fresh home inspo after an out-of-this-world virtual experience designing our dream kitchen in 3D with Lowe’s Style Studio.

And we didn’t have to pay a cent.

🥽 What we tried

After scheduling our 45-minute in-store demo, we met an attendant at our local Lowe’s, synced the Apple Vision Pro VR headset, and entered the immersive 3D kitchen for limitless customization (check out our recent reel to see what we saw inside the headset).

We were able to choose from hundreds of colors, textures, materials, and brand selections — from lighting and fixtures to countertops, cabinets, and appliances — all available in-store for your real kitchen.

These free demos aren’t just for media, either. Any Austinite can try through June 15 at the five participating locations.

🛠️ See before you renovate

Watching the hyper-detailed virtual kitchen change in real time helped us visualize design combinations we might never have tried otherwise.

Blue cabinets against a patterned backsplash? Sounds strange, but we loved it.

All-white everything with gold fixtures? Hard to picture on paper, but right there in front of us, we could tell how we felt immediately.

Nice to see it all together before the work starts.

Keep reading to hear how we felt navigating the new tech, or tap the link below to see our reel from the immersive experience.

News Notes

Development

Just one month after SXSW, demolition has begun on the Austin Convention Center, so if you pass by, you may spot “Danger” signs and caution tape. Renderings for the new plan, titled “Unconventional ATX,” show a more modern facade, huge walkway, and plenty of outdoor space. (KXAN)

Announced

Actor Neal McDonough, known for his roles in “Yellowstone” and “Suits,” and his wife Ruvé are the Austin Gamblers’ newest investors. The pair also collaborated with PBR on their new film, “The Last Rodeo.” Psst — Austin’s own Michael Dell is also an investor in the 2024 PBR champions.

Concert

Country music lovers, listen up. Nate Smith, Megan Moroney, Matt Stell, Tucker Wetmore, and Dasha will all perform at the iHeartCountry Music Festival’s Daytime Village. Those performances, which take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at the Moody Center’s Dell Technologies Plaza, are free to the public.

Opening

Takeout and delivery kitchen Tso Chinese will open a new location in south Austin’s West Slaughter Lane today. The new spot — which joins kitchens in Cherrywood, the Arboretum, Round Rock, and on South Congress Avenue — will feature a self-service kiosk for walk-in orders.

Watch

We’d like to buy a vowel. Pflugerville resident Gregory Harrington will appear on an upcoming episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” airing on Wednesday, April 23. Harrington filmed last month — learn more about his experience. (KXAN)

Holiday

Lowes, Target, and TJ Maxx. Those are three major retailers that will be closed on Sunday, April 20 for Easter. Plan your weekend shopping accordingly, and if your schedule isn’t full on Sunday, there may still be time to make Easter plans in Austin. (USA TODAY)

Why did the Driskill originally have an entrance exclusively for women?

Name another area of town that has remained as steady as the Driskill Hotel. | Photos by the Driskill and @where_is_brandy.
Last week, we shared some history about Austin’s iconic Driskill Hotel and left our readers with a question: Why did the hotel originally have an entrance just for women?

No, it wasn’t to help them make a glamorous entrance. As ~69% of you correctly guessed, it was so women could enter the hotel modestly — aka without men seeing their ankles — away from cigar smoke and coarse language.

We’ve told you a lot about the Driskill, but it’s not the only historic hotel in town. The Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel (say that three times fast) opened in 1924 and is the second-oldest historic hotel in Austin.

Like the Driskill, it served as the campaign headquarters for several Texas politicians, including Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush.

The Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel was also featured in “Miss Congeniality,” among other movies.

    The Buy

    The Wrap

I know two people who have personally worked with “Love & Death” star Jesse Plemons, and both have told me he’s a really nice guy. The actor and his equally famous wife, Kirsten Dunst, have spent some time living in Austin. Plemons has been living here on and off since filming “Friday Night Lights.”
