đź’ś This restaurant is ube-lievable

A table at Oribello's has a birria pizza, ube pancakes, and two Purple Ube-Ritas.
DJ Oribello said the birria pizza draws inspiration from the brothers’ habit of eating quesabirria weekly when they lived in California. | Photo by ATXtoday
You’ve likely seen Oribello’s Kitchen + Bar’s viral purple drinks and dishes on your social feeds, but now it’s time to meet the folks behind them.

The new sports lounge is a family affair, run by Darrel Oribello — a seasoned restaurateur and partner in Sazan Ramen and Endo Sushi — and his sons, DJ and Wesley Oribello.

ATXtoday sat down with the Oribello brothers to chat about the restaurant’s origins, Filipino and Mexican influences, and its impact on the Austin community.
Three men smile and pose together against a black background. The man in the center wears a black collared shirt and beaded necklace, while the two men on either side rest a hand on his shoulders.

Oribello’s Kitchen + Bar is DJ, Darrel, and Wesley Oribello’s first business venture as a trio.

What inspired the Oribello’s menu?

DJ: “One of my inspirations for Austin food is Paul Qui. In my head, I wanted to create something that reminded me of when I came to Austin and had East Side King for the first time and had the beef tongue baos. We wanted to do something that was fun — and not be too crazy with the flavors — but also be unapologetic with what we’re trying to do. We want to do stuff that represents us at the end of the day.”

🚧 Seal the deal

Nobody likes a pothole, which is why the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department performs preventative street maintenance each year.

The work, happening now through October, aims to preserve the integrity of Austin’s roads and increase their lifespan. You can see if your neighborhood will be affected via this street schedule map.

Here’s what to know about the routine work:
  • The most common treatment is sealcoat, which involves spreading an asphalt-like material atop the street. It’s meant to smooth the surface and remove hairline cracks that create potholes.
  • If your neighborhood is scheduled for a treatment, don’t park on the street or your vehicle may be towed to a nearby road.
  • The work has to be done in warm, dry conditions, so it’s only performed as weather permits from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays + some weekends.
  • Sealcoat treatments may result in loose gravel that settles into the street in four to six weeks.
