News Notes
Opening
  • Sip, sip, hooray. Teddy’s, a new cocktail bar in the Cherrywood neighborhood, will open its doors on Friday, Oct. 11 at the former site of Thunderbird Coffee. Helmed by the team behind Love Supreme, Teddy’s will sling batched “freezer-door cocktails,” natural wines, beer, and nonalcoholic beverages. (Eater Austin)
Closing
  • Crux Climbing Center will close its Pickle Road location at the end of the year, according to a post on the company’s Instagram. The announcement said the facility’s landlord decided not to renew the gym’s lease. The good news? A new south Austin location will open in late 2025.
Tech
  • Austin-based autonomous vehicle company Avride entered a new partnership with Uber Technologies, Inc., which will bring delivery robots and driverless rideshares to the Capital City. Avride’s sidewalk robots operating through Uber Eats will arrive in the next few weeks, followed by its robotaxi service at a yet-to-be-announced date.
Announced
  • Forgetting your reusable bag is one thing, but forgetting your wallet is another at H-E-B, where tap-to-pay isn’t currently an option. That’s finally changing. Yesterday, the Texas grocer revealed it will roll out Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay features at checkout in the coming weeks.
Sports
  • Here’s a pinch of local pride. You’ve likely heard about Vanderbilt football’s underdog win against Alabama on Saturday, but did you know two Vandy touchdowns were scored by an Austinite? Running back Sedrick Alexander also holds the title of AISD’s all-time leading rusher. (KXAN)
Listen
  • The Longhorns are back at the No. 1 spot on the AP Top 25 College Football Poll, and they’ll take on their biggest rival this weekend. Get the biggest stories every day from the local experts of the Texas Longhorns with Locked On’s daily podcasts.
Wellness
  • If you need a mid-month pick-me-up (because same), then we’re going to let you in on a little secret: The ultimate wellness experience awaits Austinites at Mokara Spa. Featuring luxe amenities and signature treatments, this spa is dedicated to relaxation + rejuvenation. Book a treatment.*
Finance
  • Credit cards that can help you get out of debt sound as wacky as pumpkin spice deodorant (yes, it’s real). But the concept is legit: Find a card with “0% intro APR” for balance transfers. Here are hands down some of the best offering no interest until 2026.*
Edu
  • Interested in working with a local tutor — or taking lessons virtually? Wyzant’s vetted instructors can help with 300+ topics, from core subjects to musical skills. The best part? It’s pay-as-you-go and starts as low as $10/session. (Psst... special offer this way.)*

📝 5 lessons learned at ACL Fest

5 lessons learned at ACL Fest weekend one

A rotating gif of photos from ACL weekend one. Shots include an aerial view of Chappell Roan's crowd, an aerial view of multicolored flags with people lounging on the grass underneath, Benson Boone doing a front flip, and Dua Lipa striking a pose with her background dancers.

Phew — how are we feeling, ACL weekend one festivalgoers? Whether you’re reminiscing or preparing for weekend two, here are five things to know about ACL 2024 so far.

1. The dust is dusting

Thanks to a drier-than-normal September and thousands of people stomping around, Zilker Park’s grassy terrain looks more like a dusty desert. Wear a bandanna or face mask to avoid the “festival flu.”

2. Chappell Roan’s crowd was colossal

The superstar’s ACL debut will go down in the history books — her fans appeared to fill the entire park. If you want to be on the barricade for her next set, you’ll need to compete with these folks.

3. “Can you hear me now?”

While Dua Lipa put on a sensational show, fans took to the internet to complain about sound issues at the American Express Stage where she performed. We’re hoping any technical difficulties are remedied before weekend two.
