Drink Up Week is finally here and we have a feeling it’ll be the toast of the town.

Here’s the tea — today through Friday, July 26, we’re celebrating the entrepreneurs, mixologists, venues, and beverages that make Austin go ‘round.

As you know, we’ve created an interactive map of can’t-miss deals offered by local businesses in Bat City. Here are the top deals our ATXtoday editors have their eyes on — and what they plan to pair with these drinks.

City Editors Morgan and Figi are eager to try $10 specialty cocktails and discounted bites at BOA Steakhouse from 4-6 p.m. They’re dropping in on Monday afternoon and have already planned their drink order: the Summertime Key Lime, Peaches n Dreams, Build Your Own Ranchwater, and BOA Smash sound equally scrumptious and refreshing.

Sushi Roku’s menu centers around izakaya-style pubs, which roughly translates to “stay-drink-place,” which are places to settle in, get comfortable, and enjoy time with friends.

As someone whose ideal happy hour includes a bite of sushi, Morgan’s also excited to pop over to Sushi Roku to grab a Roku’s Fusion for $10. It blends Tito’s Vodka, pineapple, honeydew, cantaloupe, and watermelon flavors — which sounds like a perfect complement to a plate of edamame hummus and a signature roll.

Figi can’t wait for the $5 specialty cocktails and half off bites she’s going to snag at Skinny’s Off Track Bar with a few friends from college.

We hope you enjoy sipping your way through our city this week. Cheers to you and happy Drink Up Week, Austinites.

News Notes

Tech
  • This is not how we pictured ATX on the world stage — Austin-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a global IT outage for Windows hosts after launching a content update on Friday, July 19. It has affected bank services, airlines, city services, and companies using Microsoft worldwide. (Austin American-Statesman)

  • Spread & Co. is on the move: its now-closed Jefferson Square location in Rosedale will relocate to a new brick and mortar at 2406 Manor Rd., Ste. B, in fall 2024. The new Cherrywood location will provide in-house local delivery, breakfast + lunch, grab and go options, baked goods, and retail items.
Civic
  • Austin City Council voted to launch a feasibility study for creating a public bank, which would be owned by the government, provide cheaper banking services, and use profits for local projects. Only one public bank — founded in North Dakota in 1920 — currently exists in the US. (KVUE)
Weather
  • Here comes the sun rain. Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for every day this week — continuing this summer’s trend of cooler temperatures than usual for this time of year. Local experts predict we’ll get a total of one or two inches of rain by Friday evening. (KXAN)
Traffic
  • Northwest Austin commuters, here’s your light at the end of the tunnel: Mike Sexton, the project manager for the 183 North Mobility Project, said construction is about 60% complete and the tollway should be open by early 2026. (KXAN)
Sports
  • While the Texas Longhorns continue celebrating their Southeastern Conference debut, one team is headed to another league. The SEC doesn’t have beach volleyball, so UT Austin’s team will compete in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association next year. (Austin American-Statesman)
Answered
  • In honor of Hot Summer Nights, we quizzed ATXtoday readers last week on where its sister festival, Free Week, began in 2003. The majority of you guessed Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, but it was actually the original location of Emo’s Austin where the tradition started. Did you get it right?

The heart of the African American Cultural Heritage District will soon be home to new public spaces, retail shops, offices, cultural venues, restaurants, and 100+ affordable housing units.

Thanks to years of planning and Austin City Council’s recent approval, the Urban Renewal Agency of the City of Austin has been authorized to negotiate an exclusive agreement with Pleasant Hill Collaborative for new mixed-use developments on Blocks 16 and 18 of East 11th Street.

The plans would see the Block 16 site, which is currently a dirt lot, revamped into a mix of multi-family housing, shops, rooftop amenities, and a parking garage. It sits adjacent to the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility. Plans for Block 18 include new townhomes, exterior amenities, eateries, and more.

Project leaders aim to create a gathering place that maintains the area’s history while spearheading economic growth — and construction could begin as early as 2025. Learn more.
