Picture this: it’s the weekend and there’s nothing you’d love more than dinner and cocktails at an Austin restaurant, but wait...you didn’t make a reservation.
Austin’s dining scene is diverse, star-studded, and awarded, but many eateries require a reservation — some are fully booked weeks or months in advance.
Here’s our fix: a list of eight restaurants in ATX that encourage walk-ins or don’t take reservations.

Uptown Sports Club was made for sports fans, and it shows.

Uptown Sports Club, 1200 E. 6th St., Austin | Reservations are exclusively for parties with more than six guests at this New Orleans-inspired joint.
El Alma, 1025 Barton Springs Rd., Austin | Patio seating at this Mexican restaurant is reserved for walk-ins only, making its Barton Springs location with Downtown views a must-visit.
Bill’s Oyster, 205 W. 3rd St., Austin | At this neighborhood restaurant, only a select number of tables are available for reservations, leaving room for spontaneous diners.
Justine’s Brasserie, 4710 E. 5th St., Austin | This French restaurant encourages walk-ins for parties of five or fewer. Pro tip: City Editor Morgan normally arrives at 6 p.m. and is seated quickly.

East Austin restaurant Birdie’s surprises guests with seasonal menus.
Loro, 2115 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin | Guests grab any seat, order food and drinks at the bar, and enjoy a laid-back yet elevated meal at this Asian smokehouse and bar.
Birdie’s, 2944 E. 12th St., Unit A, Austin | This first-come, first-served restaurant (where chef Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel is nominated for a James Beard Award) and wine bar’s menu is served via counter service.
Holiday on 7th, 5020 E. 7th. St., Austin | Patrons can sit indoors or on the twinkling patio for martinis and a fancy meal.
Komé Sushi Kitchen, 5301 Airport Blvd., Unit #100, Austin | Locals rave about this trendy sushi spot, so arrive early or be prepared to wait.

East Austin has a new spot to sip and snack. Prana Cafe opened at 1623 E. 7th St. on Saturday, June 1, offering smoothies, coffee, tea, juices, and sandwiches. The cafe is adorned with colorful artwork by owner Mike Affaneh, who said the menu will continue to evolve. (Community Impact)
Civic
A voter-approved tax rate election, or VATRE, may appear on November’s ballot for Austin ISD. It’s meant to help with teacher pay and prevent school closures — but it could also add around $35 a month in school taxes to homeowners’ bills next year. (The Austin Chronicle)
Environment
If you see grey sludge in Lady Bird Lake this month, don’t worry — it’s actually lanthanum-modified clay that removes phosphorous, one of the main food sources of toxic algae. The city of Austin is targeting new areas this year, including a section around the Festival Beach boat ramp. (KXAN)

Travis County Judge Denise Hernandez was awarded AU40 Austinite of the Year at the annual Austin Under 40 Awards gala on Saturday, June 1. Hernandez presides over Travis County Court of Law No. 6 and leads a youth diversion program called Transformative Youth Justice. (Austin Business Journal)

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” singer Cyndi Lauper will bring her farewell tour to The Moody Center on Thursday, Nov. 14. Presale tickets drop at 10 a.m. today, and general tickets will be available at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Closing
1417 French Bistro, a French restaurant in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood, shuttered suddenly after serving diners for the last time on Thursday, May 30. Its co-owner confirmed the building is being redeveloped, and a sale listing implies the site may be a condominium in the future. (Eater Austin)

Before serenading The Moody Center on Saturday, Justin Timberlake and his crew biked through Downtown Austin and documented the ride on Instagram. The group commented on the heat and the hills, to which locals may respond: “Cry Me a River.”
History
Many of east Austin’s first residents are buried at The Bethany Cemetery, the city’s first Black cemetery. The cemetery held a celebration on Saturday, June 1, and several attendees discovered memorials of their ancestors for the first time. (KVUE)
