Action: Paramount Theatre’s 50th annual Summer Classic Film Series will feature 120+ films

Movie buffs, this one’s for you. The Paramount Theatre’s beloved Summer Classic Film Series returns to the historic, 108-year-old landmark this Friday, May 24 for its 50th season.

The event’s golden anniversary will bring the Hollywood glam to ATX. More than 120 flicks will screen at The Paramount through Sunday, Sept. 1, along with special guests + fun gatherings. Here’s a sneak preview of what to expect — pass the popcorn, please.

🎥 Opening week highlights

  • “Casablanca” + “Top Hat” | Friday, May 24 | 7 p.m. + 9:15 p.m. | Of all the movie joints in all the towns. The series will open with a 35mm double-feature of the 1942 Humphrey Bogart + Ingrid Bergman classic followed by the 1935 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musical comedy. Truly classic.
  • Robert Rodriguez + Alexis Bledel Q&A | Saturday, May 25 | 5 p.m. + 7:30 p.m. | A star unveiling ceremony will be held on the Avenue of Paramount Stars for the Texas filmmaker, followed by a “Sin City” screening and Q&A with Bledel, famous for “Gilmore Girls.” RSVP.
  • “Star Wars: A New Hope” | Sunday, May 26 | 3 p.m. | Watch the 1977 classic light(saber) up the screen as part of the Family Film Series. Pro tip: Snag discounted tickets for kids age 12 and under.
  • Goblin | Monday, May 27 | 7 p.m. | The Italian progressive rock band will perform the live score from George A. Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead.”

  • In a 9-2 vote, Austin City Council approved Phase II of the HOME Initiative, which will reduce the minimum size of a single-family lot from 5,750 sqft to 1,800 sqft. The initiative is geared toward alleviating Austin’s housing shortage and increasing affordability, but it doesn’t require any change from current homeowners. (Austin American-Statesman)

  • It’s almost time for Texas voters to choose the final candidates who will appear on November’s ballot. Here’s everything you need to know about the primary runoff elections before Election Day on Tuesday, May 28. (KXAN)

  • Everything’s bigger in Texas, even our suburbs. For the third year in a row, Georgetown is the fastest-growing city with a population greater than 50,000 in the US — and Kyle took the No. 2 spot. Leander, Conroe, and New Braunfels also made the top 10. (KXAN)

  • A new four-story hotel may be coming to west Austin near Pennybacker Bridge and Bull Creek. Currently called the Champion Commercial Development, plans include 114 rooms and a 4,900-sqft restaurant. (Austin Business Journal)

  • Just over 700. That’s how many people named Kyle gathered in Kyle, Texas over the weekend during an attempt to break the world record for the most Kyles united in one place. The group didn’t break the record, but Kyles from all walks of life enjoyed themselves. (KVUE)

  • Arlo Grey at the LINE continues to host a “Top Chef” Watch Party + dinner every Wednesday through June 19 in support of Chef Kristen Kish’s TV hosting gig. The evening includes a three-course meal and a signed menu from the chef to take home. Tickets are $99.
Plan ahead
  • The 10th Annual Ney Dey celebration will offer attendees a first look at the Elisabet Ney Museum’s new landscape plan. Head to the Hyde Park gem for artist-led activities, performances by award-winning musicians, and food vendors at 12-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25.
