Hot Homes: 7 historic houses to daydream in

A gif cycling through photos of a 1921 home in Travis Heights.

Imagine pouring coffee in a century-old kitchen, working at a desk in a 90-year-old office, or maintaining the lawn of a house that’s been a fixture on your block for 130 years.

Dream homes and creatively stylized homes are gorgeous, but there’s a certain charm to living in a home with history.

Do some daydreaming with these seven on-the-market historic homes in the Austin area.

1201 Travis Heights Blvd. | 3 beds, 4 baths | $2.6 million
This century-old craftsman home was built in 1921 by William H. Stacy, who helped found the Travis Heights neighborhood. The restored home features skyline views, hardwood floors, woodwork, and a 12,110-sqft lot just minutes from Lady Bird Lake.

This 1939-built Tarrytown home is just one block from the Lions Municipal Golf Course. The open floor plan leads into a renovated space, but this gem still features original hardwood flooring and fireplaces.

4814 Ave. G | 3 beds, 3 baths | $695,000
This airy Hyde Park home is lined with windows, allowing natural light to stream in. Built in 1938, the home has an enclosed front porch and is in walking distance to multiple parks and popular restaurants.

4115 Ave. A | 4 beds, 2 1/2 baths | $1.35 million
The 1920s merge with the 2020s in this renovated 1927 bungalow. Don’t miss the home’s period-style wood siding, refurbished potting shed (complete with high-speed internet, heating, and cooling), and custom outdoor planters.

1600 Rio Grande St. | 4 beds, 4 baths | $2.99 million
This fairy tale-like Queen Anne Victorian-style home was built in the 1890s. The Judge’s Hill property’s detailed wrap-around porch and dreamy second-floor balcony pair with an interior that’s modern with a touch of yore.

Dive into Austin’s 2023 Municipal Equality Index score

The Human Rights Campaign released the 2023 Municipal Equality Index, and Austin is on the list. How did we score?

Each year, the Human Rights Campaign releases a Municipal Equality Index, which takes a deep dive into municipal laws, policies, services, and how inclusive they are of LGBTQ+ people. This year’s edition examined 506 cities on 49 different criteria across five categories: non-discrimination laws, municipality as employer, services and programs, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.

Based on these criteria, Austin earned a score of 100 out of 100. In case you missed it, that’s the same as last year’s score. Here’s a breakdown of how we got here… and how that score might change.

Non-discrimination laws

This category looks at whether LGBTQ+ discrimination is prohibited by law in areas of employment, housing, and public accommodation. Austin achieved a 30 out of 30 for our laws across the state, county, and municipality.
