Austin City Council approved a $5.5 billion city budget, the biggest budget in Austin’s history, and the ad valorem property tax increase of 3.4%. The budget was approved with three amendments — read more about the plan. (KXAN)

A new bookstore, cafe, and bar hybrid called First Light Books will open this Saturday, Aug. 19 at 4300 Speedway. The Hyde Park spot will have a vast cookbook collection, pastries from Texas French Bread, coffee drinks from Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors, plus St. Elmo + Hi Sign beers. (Eater Austin)

Amid the ongoing teacher shortage, Round Rock ISD is offering a $3,000 stipend to ~80 new hires. The district is in need of special education teachers, high school math teachers, and high school Spanish teachers. (KVUE)

Adidas, No Comply, and Austin FC just dropped a footwear and clothing collection inspired by ‘90s soccer kits and skater style. You can buy the pieces at both Verde Stores and online — peruse the capsule for yourself.
Announced
Houston-based clothing boutique Francesca’s will open a new Austin location this Friday, Aug. 18. The store, located at 11010 Domain Dr., will be twice the size of the average Francesca’s store and feature a mini version of its tween brand, Franki, inside. (Community Impact Austin)
