What is a LEED certification?

Have you seen a local building described as “LEED-certified” and wondered what that means? We won’t leed you on — here’s everything you need to know.

What is LEED?

LEED — which stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” — is an international green building system developed by the US Green Building Council (UGBC). The certification encourages more efficient buildings and communities through all phases of development, from new builds to maintenance.

What are the levels?

A project earns its LEED certification through points. Points are awarded through 20+ categories which address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health, and indoor environmental quality.

The more points a project earns, the higher its certification level. The four levels are:

Closed
  • Restaurant, bar, and event space Native Hostel — located on 807 E. 4th St. — has closed down to make room for a boozy new mini golf course called Holey Moley. As for Native’s restaurants, only sushi spot Toshokan was invited to stay. (Eater Austin)
Announced
  • Red River Cultural District’s free summer music festival, Hot Summer Nights, will return Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23. Expect performances from Caleb de Casper and Foxtales.
Development
  • Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Round Rock, located on 3001 Kalahari Blvd., expanded its facilities to include nine new waterslides, an adults-only swim-up bar, and a 900-ft “Adventure River.” (KVUE)
Austinite
  • UT geology professor Ian Dalziel was awarded the Polar Medal — the UK’s highest honor for polar exploration — for his contributions to Antarctic geology. Dalziel is being recognized in part for his work leading expeditions to places like South Georgia, a remote sub-Antarctic island.
Ranked
  • Two local hospitals — Central Austin’s St. David’s Medical Center and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center — were recognized in Newsweek’s Best Maternity Hospitals list.

You might want to sit down for this one — Kerbey Lane on South Lamar is once again open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays for the first time since the pandemic.

Kerbey Lane All Day Cafe, at 3003 S. Lamar Blvd., is celebrating with some revamped menu items and the return of the daily happy hour. We’re not buttering you up — let’s talk about what’s new at the local mini-chain.
  • A new All Day Cafe menu featuring a black cherry pork chop, green chile mac and cheese, a vegan broccolini sandwich, and cocktail selection.
  • The return of daily happy hour from 4-6 p.m. — meaning $4 beers and $5 cocktails — starting this Friday, June 30.
  • An early bird cocktail happy hour from 7-10 a.m.
  • Free meals for kids after 4 p.m. for the rest of June
