Weather
  • May weather has been relatively mild for Austin this year. Half of the days this month came in below the average of 86.6º. Compared to last year, this May has been significantly cooler and has yet to break 94º. (KVUE)
Concert
  • We “Dare” you to get tickets to see Gorillaz for its “Cracker Island” tour. The London-based band will perform at Q2 Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 13 with special guests Lil Yachty, Remi Wolf, and Kaytranada. Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m.
Cause
  • Music nonprofit Beat 4 Beat will host a fundraiser and concert featuring tunes from Jaime Ospina and Grammy-winning band Grupo Fantasma at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1 at The Belmont. Tickets start at $30 and benefit free after-school music programs.

  • Austin’s first Latino mayor, Gustavo “Gus” Garcia, is the honored subject of a new mural at 1201 E. Rundberg Lane. Created by artist Lindsey Millikan and Austin’s Art in Public Places Program, the mural depicts a colorful portrait of Gus, who was elected in 2001. (KUT)

  • The City of Austin is currently offering bonuses to help fill more than 500 open lifeguard positions. Applicants must be at least 15 years old and work at least 200 hours to be eligible for the $250 bonus, or work 400 hours to earn up to $750. (KVUE)

How to avoid falling prey to online scam artists

Around 375 million text scams were sent per day in 2022. Austinites lost $75,000 to scammers last year, so don’t fall for a phishing message.

Online phishing scams are dangerous enough to drain people’s bank accounts by tricking people in to giving up their financial information.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
  • Be wary of sending cash through PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, or wire transfers, especially if you don’t know the person or organization.
  • Don’t click any suspicious links, especially if they come from an unidentified phone number or email address.
  • Don’t provide personal information, unless you initiated the call, text, or email.
  • Be careful about responding to requests for upfront fees, unless the transaction was initiated by you.
  • When in doubt, call the official organization’s line and ask if they contacted you.

I’m back after a long (long) weekend of moving. As much as I love my new backyard, it is infested by mosquitoes and I’m a little bit afraid to go outside, lest I get bitten. I’ve got some citronella candles and bug spray, but do y’all have any hacks for ridding your yard of mosquitoes?
