Table of Contents

Dozens of bands, 100+ shows, and four days of music in the best downtown venues all for the low, low price of $0 — that’s right, Austin, it’s free week.

The annual event — which began at Emo’s Austin in 2003 — takes place on the first weekend of January every year. And this year, it’s quite the lineup.

Here’s our guide to a weekend of musical madness, including COVID-19 safety protocols. Note: As of Tuesday evening, Austin was approaching Stage 5 public health guidelines. Please keep in mind that these events may be subject to change or cancellation.

Safety guidelines

Travis County is currently under Stage 4 public health guidelines due to the spread of the COVID-19 omicron variant. The city recommends:

  • Vaccinated people wear a mask in all indoor + outdoor gatherings, regardless of their status as low-risk or high-risk individuals
  • Unvaccinated people refrain from indoor or outdoor gatherings with people outside of their household, and only travel or shop if essential.

Empire Control Room and Mohawk Austin will require proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the last 72 hours.

Masks are required indoors at Mohawk when not eating or drinking, and will also be “strongly encouraged” at Empire Control Room.
