SXSW 2023 is barreling around the corner and there are a lot — and we mean a lot — of local musicians on the roster.

According to our calculations, and pending any last-minute announcements, 175 Austin-area musicians and bands will take the stage throughout the nine-day festival.

City Editor Figi here. We’ve got some incredible bands coming, but I marked my favorites if you don’t know where to start. The music festival is but one piece of SXSW, so don’t miss our ultimate SXSW guide and our upcoming guide to doing SXSW for free.

Austinites will soon be able to cheer for a new pro sports team.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Texas Smoke, a Women’s Professional Fastpitch team, is currently being formed.

Here’s everything we know:

The crew

The team is founded by former Cincinnati Reds player and MLB Hall of Famer Brandon Phillips and entrepreneur Jade Cargill.

The season

The Texas Smoke is the fourth franchise in Women’s Professional Fastpitch. The teams’ values are oriented around supporting women’s sports and building community. (Fun fact: the name “Texas Smoke” comes from a legendary defense of Austin in the 1840s.)

The season opens on Thursday, June 15.
