40+ sports events to cheer for in Austin this fall

Between Texas football’s49-0 defeat of Oklahoma and Austin FC’s trip to the Western Conference Finals in their second-ever season, this fall has been an exciting one for Austin sports.
And with basketball season just starting, a national strongman competition headed to ATX this weekend, and Texas hockey picking back up, the cheers are nowhere close to dying down.
Whether you bleed burnt orange or consider yourself more of a social sports fan, here’s what’s coming up the field for the rest of 2022.
Soccer
Austin FCis headed to California this Sun., Oct. 30, to face Los Angeles FC in the Western Conference Final. The winner will head to the MLS Cup Final, so you’ll want to don your Austin green and tune into ABCat 2 p.m. to cheer on the Verde and Black.
Football
Texas football has a bye this weekend, but the Horns will pick it right back up next week with an away game against Kansas State on Sat., Nov. 5.

Basketball
UT’s basketball team, coming off of a 22-12 record from last season, is starting up the 2022-23 season at its brand new venue, the $338 millionMoody Center.
The team’s first home game is this weekend, a charity exhibition vs. Arkansas. Can’t make it? No worries — there are nine other home games taking place before the end of the year.

A tornado damaged almost three dozen homes in Jarrell — a town just north of Georgetown — on Monday night, marking the third tornado in the area in the last seven months. The tornado has not yet received a rating from the National Weather Service. (KXAN)

Civic
Austin-Travis County received a delivery of almost 10,000 doses of naloxone, a life-saving medication for people suffering from opioid overdoses. Officials urge pharmacies to request stocks of the drug, which was gifted by humanitarian organization Direct Relief.
The City of Austin is increasing pay for 911 call takers and police dispatcher staff in order to improve retention and draw applicants to fill emergency call center vacancies. The salary adjustments will be implemented before the end of this year.
Development
A 270-acre mixed-use development in Southeast Austin is one step closer to reality, with recent approval from the city’s planning commission. The project is set to include 7.3+ million sqft of retail, residential, and office space. 🏗 (Austin Business Journal)

Austin Energy crews will install the Zilker Holiday Tree today, after a short postponement due to high winds earlier this week. Mark your calendars for the tree’s lighting ceremony, which will be held on Sun., Nov. 27 at 5:30 p.m. 🎄 (KVUE)

Christopher Krinksy, the chef behind Ramen Garage, has plans to openRamen Del Barrio inside the Hana World Market. Pick up “Mexican-fusion ramen” from the location at 1700 Parmer Ln. starting early next year. 🍜 (Eater Austin)

Texas ranks No. 3 in the US for natural disasters impact, according to a new WalletHub study. The placement is based on the number of climate disasters causing more than$1 billion in damages — which Texas ranks firstfor — and the total loss from disasters per capita over the last five decades.

If you had to guess which candy Texans like best, what would you choose?
Knowing everything’s bigger in Texas, would you opt for a king-sized Snickers? Or lean on our roots and suppose it must be a delectable pecan praline? We hate to break it to you, but if these are your guesses, you’d be wrong.
According to data from sweets retailer Candystore.com, the type of candy Texans order most is Starburst.
More than 902,000 pounds of the sticky sweet candy were ordered in the last 15 years, followed closely by Reese’s Cups with ~890,000 pounds ordered. The third-place prize went to Sour Patch Kids, with 691,000 pounds ordered.
