For as long as she can remember, Jean Buckner has wanted to open up a bookstore.
After years of work (and a couple decades of dreaming), Jean’s shop, Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar, is officially opening this Sat., Oct. 15. A labor of love for the former advertising professional, the East Austin spot is a cozy + colorful home for wine lovers and readers alike, nestled in a 140-year-old building Jean has dubbed “Austin’s living room.”
Here’s what to expect from the new bookstore + wine bar.
A historic setting
The bookstore is inside the Haehnel building, a stately, stone-lined space with more than100 years of legacy in the community.
“The building is well loved. It’s well lived in, it’s seen a lot of life,” Jean said. “That’s kind of the inspiration for the branding and the furniture.”
The space is furnished with pieces from Facebook marketplace, estate sales, and the Austin Antique Mall. In effort to keep Vintage as local as possible, she has partnered with an Austin-area antique furniture dealer to offer some pieces in the store for sale, and decorated the walls with works by Austin artists, also for sale.

Vintage isn’t your run-of-the-mill big box bookstore: it’s designed to wander in.
As such, the shop will primarily stock new releases across several genres, such as fantasy, contemporary fiction, and graphic novels.
“We really want to facilitate the browsing experience,” Jean said.
Pairing books and wine
Another thing Jean is passionate about? Texas wine — and giving it the recognition it deserves.
Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar will always have Texas wines on the menu, Jean said. And in case you’ve ever wondered what book goes best with a merlot, Vintage’s bookshelves are also stacked with staff recommendations for book + wine pairings.

Hey ATXtoday readers, City Editor London here. 👋
I recently spent some time cleaning up the Lake Creek Trail with Keep Austin Beautiful. Not only did we pick up 20+ bags of litter and debris along the North Austin creek, but I also learned a lot about how to be a better steward of our Central Texas waterways.
Here are a few tips:
First thing’s first, don’t litter. You can also prevent waste from accidentally blowing away by not overfilling your trash bin and being extra careful while camping and hiking.
Next time you go for a walk or run, try plogging. Originally a Swedish trend, the now-global effort is as simple as picking up trash while out and about.
If you have land, plant native plants — they help reduce runoff into our lakes and streams + support local ecosystems.
Editor’s pick: Fun fact about me: I’m a major blink-182 fan. I’ve seen them a few times already, but you better believe I’ll be headed to the Moody Center to see them again next summer. 🤘
